Expert Tooth Extractions With Minimal Discomfort
At Greater Dental Health, we perform tooth removal procedures for teeth that cannot be saved through other treatments, such as root canals, fillings, or crowns. Teeth may need to be removed for several reasons, including severe tooth decay, infection, injury, and disease. Other reasons for extraction include orthodontic correction of a patient's bite. By removing some teeth, the remaining teeth can shift into the proper alignment.
- If an adult tooth is knocked out or broken due to an accident, a simple extraction may be needed to restore the smile.
- Surgical extractions may be recommended for several reasons. Extracting a baby tooth may be necessary to prevent crowding or other orthodontic reasons. Sometimes, a severely decayed tooth cannot be saved and must be removed from under the gums to prevent the infection from spreading. Other times, wisdom teeth may need to be pulled to maintain oral health and prevent other dental issues.
Simple Extractions
Simple tooth extraction involves removing teeth that are visible above the gum line using forceps and elevators. This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia.
Surgical Extractions
Surgical tooth extraction involves removing teeth that cannot be easily accessed due to factors such as impaction or significant decay that extends below the gum line. Surgical extractions may require general anesthesia or conscious sedation for patient comfort.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is sometimes necessary following a tooth extraction to rebuild bone mass in areas where it has been lost due to infection or injury.
The Tooth Extraction Process
Evaluation
During the evaluation appointment, our dentist will evaluate your teeth and gums and take X-rays to identify the position of the tooth roots and the condition of the supporting bone and gum tissue. Then, we will create an extraction plan to offer a painless and effective dental experience to our patients.
Tooth Prep
Our dentist may prescribe antibiotics prior to the procedure to reduce your risk of infection. Your mouth may also be numbed with anesthesia.
Tooth Removal
If it is a simple extraction, you'll have your tooth removed at our dentist's office in a minimally invasive procedure using a special tool known as an elevator to loosen the tooth before gently removing it. Surgical extractions require making a small incision in the gum.
Bone Grafting
After the tooth is removed, you may need bone grafting to restore the structure of the jawbone where the tooth root was previously located. After the grafting is complete, you'll be fitted with a restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions
A tooth extraction procedure is performed when the tooth is damaged past the point of repair or when the teeth are too crowded in the mouth. Tooth extractions are also necessary if the tooth is impacted. Impacted teeth are teeth that haven't erupted from the gum line because the jaw isn't large enough to accommodate them.
If a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay, there's a good chance it can be repaired with a crown or a filling rather than a tooth extraction. However, if these options aren't possible because the tooth has too much damage, extraction may be recommended.
At Greater Dental Health, your extraction will be simple and comfortable! Whether you need a simple or surgical extraction, we'll provide you with the most effective anesthetics to ensure that you won't feel any pain during your procedure. You'll likely feel pressure on the area as we remove the tooth, but the process won't hurt.
After tooth extraction, it's normal to experience some post-surgical symptoms, including:
- Swelling
- Bleeding
- Sensitivity
These symptoms should subside within just a few days. However, the jawbone will still need a few weeks to fully heal before restoration or replacement can be performed.
We will provide you with instructions to follow after your dental extraction. These may include:
- Avoiding the area with your toothbrush during the healing process
- Using an antimicrobial mouthwash to keep the area clean
- Taking prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers
- Avoiding strenuous activities for a day or two after the extraction
Teeth extractions are needed when a tooth cannot be repaired, such as when it has been severely damaged due to trauma or decay or if it's impacted below the gum line. In some cases, wisdom teeth are removed to prevent overcrowding in the mouth.
Extractions are performed under local anesthetic to numb the mouth and prevent discomfort. For particularly anxious patients, sedation dentistry may be used to keep them calm and relaxed throughout their procedure.
After the tooth has been removed, the gums may be stitched closed, and a blood clot will form in the socket. Patients can expect some pain and swelling for about five to seven days after their procedure, which can be managed with pain medication and ice packs.
After your tooth extraction is complete, you will rest under our supervision in the office until you are ready to be released to the care of a responsible adult driver. We may prescribe an antibiotic or pain medication to help manage discomfort and prevent infection. You may notice some bleeding when brushing your teeth for the first couple of days after your extraction. This is normal and should stop within a couple of days.
If you have any concerns or questions, please call us. We will happily address them with you. Don't forget to follow your aftercare instructions! Your jaw may be stiff and tender for a few days after the surgery. You can use an ice pack to reduce pain and swelling. Eat soft foods and take care to avoid anything that may cause trauma to the tooth socket, such as smoking or using straws.
Our dentist may also provide you with a plastic device known as a "splint" to help keep your mouth open during healing. If our dentist provides you with any post-op instructions, make sure to review them before your procedure so that you can be prepared and have a successful outcome!
If you have questions regarding your upcoming appointment, please contact our office today. We are always happy to help in any way we can before your visit so that your appointment goes as smoothly as possible. We look forward to working with you soon!
Many things factor into the length of time you'll need to recover after having a tooth pulled, but the average recovery time is typically about one week. However, some people recover faster than others and may be able to go back to work or resume their daily activities sooner. Factors that can impact your healing time include:
- Your age and health: Older adults may need more time to heal from oral surgery than young, healthy patients.
- The type of extraction you had: Removing wisdom teeth will likely take longer to recover from than removing another tooth. This is because wisdom teeth are harder to access and are larger in size than other teeth in your mouth.
- The amount of impaction your tooth had: Teeth that are partially erupted in your gums will be easier to pull and will heal quicker than fully impacted teeth.
- Whether you had stitches or not: Some patients opt for sutures while others don't for faster healing times. If you elect to have stitches, you will need to have them taken out by our dental team at the office.
- How well you take care of your health after your procedure: Following all of our dentist's instructions will help you heal faster and decrease your risk of complications. Be sure to follow all aftercare instructions and take any medications as prescribed to promote full healing and reduce the risk of infection.
